Safety Moment – Safe + Sound Week
It is Safe + Sound Week! It is a nationwide event held each August to recognize the success of workplace health and safety programs. We can do the same for our scouts and scouters.
This year’s Safe + Sound Week emphasis is on hazard assessment. For all the activities we do we need to define the steps, identify any hazards, and develop ways of making it safe. In scouting, we have a detailed process called the Program Hazard Analysis.
We also have the Safety PAUSE process which stresses the importance of a last-minute safety check in the field. Safety Pause stands for:
· Pause before you start
· Assess possible hazards
· Understand how to proceed safely
· Share your plan with others
· Execute the activity safely
Safe + Sound Week is a great time to get all scouts and scouters to commit to pause and reflect on the tasks at hand just before beginning and take the opportunity to take necessary precautions to prevent any present or potential hazards.
